African-American Colleges Denied entrance to white colleges and universities, African Americans pursued higher education in institutions created to serve them. Over the decades, almost 100 African-American schools of higher education were founded across the country. Their impact on the African-American community--and on American life as a whole--is incalculable. This map displays each college and university by location, with historical information attached. Like the other areas of this site, the content of this map will continue to grow. If you have any affiliation with any of these colleges, and would like to offer your personal perspective on your experience there, please contact us.
