Jim Crow Heroes
As producer for the television series The Rise and Fall of Jim Crow, Richard Wormser was influenced by the courage and struggles of many men and women who survived and resisted the discrimination and terror of the Jim Crow years. The list that follows is just a few of the many people whom Wormser would designate as heroes. What does the word hero mean? Trace the derivation of the word from classical times. Name some ancient day heroes and some people whom you think are heroic today. What do all heroes have in common? What makes a person a hero? Select three or four of the people listed by Richard Wormser and do some additional research on each, comparing them to each other and to past heroes. Many of the individuals listed below can be found in the various other resources places on this site, especially the Encyclopedia. Many are discussed in the In-Depth essays.
