On the Front Lines Collection Activity Suggestions

We recommend starting the examination of all photographic collections with the Image Gallery Essay and lesson plan.

Here are some additional suggestions on how to use the images in this collection with your students.

  1. Show the collection to your students. Discuss the contributions of each of the people, and of the groups in which they were involved or that they created.

  2. Ask students to share what they know about civil rights leaders. As a class, create a timeline of the leaders that you've compiled. Assign some students to fill in blank spots on the timeline, while others do further research on the leaders from the collection.

As your timeline research continues, you may have students create a Hyper-Studio presentation or web site that documents the information they gather.

  3. Go to the Narratives section of the web site and have your students select one of the first account narratives and explore the heroism found in each person.

  4. Go to the Sports and Jim Crow America Map and have your students select among these athletes as a subject for research.
