The Harlem Renaissance
http://www.nku.edu/~diesmanj/harlem.html
This "excellent resource offers a brief history of the Harlem Renaissance, online works of sixteen writers and a wonderful collection of paintings" by seven artists. "Two short stories from Hurston are presented." Even very young students will enjoy the paintings displayed here. These rich primary sources are augmented by a handy link to the "Perspectives in American Literature" site "which offers a list of primary sources, selected bibliographies, and study questions for many of the Harlem Renaissance writers."

S.C.O.R.E. Teacher CyberGuide: Their Eyes Were Watching God
http://www.sdcoe.k12.ca.us/score/eyes/eyetg.htm
"Most students will enjoy doing these" five activities that "require them to use the Internet as well as the novel," Their Eyes Were Watching God by Zora Neale Hurston. They include mapping, writing a persuasive letter, keeping a reader's journal, creating a paper quilt and penning a persuasive essay. URLs for links are listed on the home page. Students have access to the same sites within the five activity sections via hypertext. However, some links were not productive. This excellent teacher resource provides specific goals and grading criteria and is aimed at 8th to 12th graders.

City Honors Zora Neale Hurston Page
http://cityhonors.buffalo.k12.ny.us/city/rsrcs/eng/auth/hur.html
Hurston is addressed here in a handful of student essays on Their Eyes Were Watching God, "not to be taken as authoritative works." This could be a source of ideas for essay topics. They are "well written (and) will provide insight into the novel." A wealth of links to other good sites is a boon; note that some of the links provided have restricted access.
