Plessy v. Ferguson
http://www.watson.org/~lisa/blackhistory/post-civilwar/plessy.html
"An excellent site that puts the Plessy v. Ferguson case in the context of the African-American experience in the 19th and 20th centuries." This site contains a "concise summary" of the case with excerpts representing the minority and majority opinions of the case. The strength of the site is that the content "gets to the heart of the matter" and provides students a strong example of examining and summarizing a Supreme Court case. The site includes links to related Web sites as well as "footnote citations with bibliographical references." The site is a "hypertext textbook" which would most benefit middle school students.

Plessy v. Ferguson, 163 U.S. 537 (1896)
http://www.bowdoin.edu/~sbodurt2/court/cases/plessy.html
This site, part of a larger collection entitled "Supreme Court Archives" contains documents, including decisions written by individual Justices as well as the majority opinion related to the Plessy v. Ferguson case. The actual transcripts and documents make the site a "valuable tool for teaching primary source material." The "language and nature of the way Supreme Court decisions are formatted" necessitates strong reading support for students as they access information and process the case and its interpretation of the 13th and 14th amendments with respect to segregation in the United States. The site would be most appropriate for use by junior high and high school students.

"Teachers who are looking for primary source documents will find this site helpful." While the link goes directly to the Plessy v. Ferguson case, which is "edited to be more approachable for students," the larger site, On the Road to Freedom, offer a more extensive list of documents related to civil rights. For each document a "short and insightful" introduction to the case and ruling is provided. This site is a "good place to begin" as research is conducted by students.
