Poll Tax: The 1896 Supreme Court case in which the Court upheld a Louisiana law requiring segregated railroad facilities as long as such facilities were equal to each other. The Court essentially ruled that segregation did not constitute discrimination, thus establishing the "separate but equal" doctrine that was practiced until the Brown v. Board decision in 1954.
